There is a rumor (Also see: Boston TV Report)floating around that Mike Lowell has been offered a 4 year contract in the range of $55-60 million by the Braves, Angels, Cardinals, and Yankees. He was offered only a 3 year $36 million extension by the Red Sox. Three of those teams don't surprise me - but the Braves?
My thoughts on the situation: Lowell's agent is likely putting the rumor out there to try to get a 4th year from the Red Sox. The Braves do have some extra money available this offseason, which may be why the agent or whoever decided to throw them out there - despite the fact the move makes no sense. The Braves are solid at the corner infield spots with Chipper and Tex.
The only way I could see there being any truth is if Tex/Boras has told the Braves he won't re-sign and they are looking to trade him. Then you move Chipper to 1st and play Lowell at 3rd or vice versa. I am skeptical that is the case though, especially since it doesn't really make sense to give a 34 year old Lowell a 4 year deal for that kind of money.
